The Easiest Way to “Wash” a Vintage Rug

how to wash a vintage rug

I’d love to share a really easy and free way to wash and maintain your vintage rug on a regular basis.

A few times a year on a sunny day, take your vintage rug outside for a sun bath! Place your rug out in the direct sunlight for 4-8 hours, flipping it over halfway through. I lay my rugs in my gravel, as it has a nice amount of air flow underneath it. If you have a deck that would also be a perfect spot for a rug sun bath. If neither of those is an option for you, find a small spot of dry grass or drape a small sized rug on top of a patio table or place a larger rug out in your driveway. The UV rays in sunshine are naturally antibacterial and will zap any scent causing issues from spills, pet accidents, etc. The sun will also dry out any lingering moisture that may be harboring in your rug- especially if you are using it in the bathroom, kitchen or as your doormat.

***Bonus points for vacuuming your rug front and back- when you vacuum the under side of your rug you might just be surprised when you lift it up, the vibrations from vacuuming the backside will actually help shake out extra debris that your regular vacuuming job just isn’t getting.

This is real life- and yes things are going to happen to your special vintage rug. But wool is a miracle fiber and there are some very simple ways to upkeep it. I promise you, your vintage rug will last you decades upon decades no matter how much it gets trampled on, with just a tiny bit of tender loving care. Plus a vintage rug in the garden just looks cute too…

YES to heirloom pieces that last a lifetime!
